HURRICANE CATS
In the wake of Hurricane Beryl’s devastating impact on the SPCA of Brazoria County, Jami, the tireless transport coordinator, found herself at the epicenter of a crisis. As she surveyed the wreckage—downed trees, power outages, and damage to vital facilities—she knew immediate action was crucial to save the shelter’s animals. The storm had left their cattery and clinic without power, plunging them into stifling heat and jeopardizing medical procedures. With overcrowding already a challenge, the situation became dire. The NOAH Center was first in line to help take in homeless cats from this natural disaster.
The President of the SPCA Board, Beate Damm and Board Member Melissa Vdayan, embarked on a journey spanning over 2,400 miles from Texas to Washington State. Their mission: to transport these cherished cats—described as “old timers” from their shelter—to safety in Washington, creating vital space for incoming animals displaced by the hurricane.
The partnership delivered a lifeline to Brazoria County. The NOAH Center’s support not only saved lives but also rekindled hope in a community grappling with loss. These cats, once facing an uncertain future, now symbolized resilience and compassion, offering a ray of light in a time of darkness.
