Maybe your cat has disappeared and is hiding under the bed, or perhaps your new dog destroyed your couch when you left to run an errand. It doesn’t mean you’ve adopted a cat that hates people or a difficult dog. It likely means that they are overwhelmed and anxious at being in a completely new environment with someone who is basically a stranger, I know I would be!
That’s why it’s important for you to remember that this is all new for them and it will take time for them to adjust, you just need to be patient and understanding.
This is also when you can refer to the Rule of 3’s timeline. It will help you, help your new pet decompress and begin adjusting to their new home.
3 days – During the first 3 days after the adoption your new pet will likely be stressed and showing signs of anxiety or fear. You can help them by setting a routine, being patient and calm, and giving them time and space. You shouldn’t force them to interact, let them do it in their own time.
3 weeks – During the next 3 weeks your new pet will start to settle in. They’ll begin to show more of their personality, explore their new environment, and test boundaries. You can help at this stage by working on basic training using consistent positive reinforcement, set boundaries, and be consistent!
3 months – At the end of the first 3 months typically pets are further adjusted to their new home, people, and any other animals. They will begin to trust you, show their personality, and really become a part of the family. This doesn’t mean you can slack off, to continue to build your bond it’s important that you keep up with training, use positive reinforcement, and maintain expectations and routines.
Now this is general timeline – not every pet will take the same amount of time to adjust – some may settle in faster and others may take longer please be patient. At the end of the day it’s important that you remember never to give up on them, because they will never give up on you!
